GHALIB AND SUDAMA’S WORLDS

Ghalib said in this sher:

دونو جہان دے کے وہ سمجھے کہ خوش رہا
یاں آ پڑی یہ شرم کہ تکرار کیا کریں

DONO JAHAN DE KE WOH SAMJHE K KHUSH RAHA
YAAN AA PADI YEH SHARM K TAKRAAR KYA KAREN.

(After giving me both the worlds my benefactor thought I should be happy. I was kept from asking for more by fear of looking greedy. [and thus settled with what I got])

Here I cannot but remember a tale from Hindu mythology where Sudama, Lord Krishna’s childhood friend, visits Him. Now Sudama was very poor yet his mother gave him, as a token gift for Krishna, a small quantity of roasted rice, wrapped in a piece of old cloth. This little bundle was hidden under his arm at the time of the meeting. Sudama was thinking of saving this rice and of taking it back when Krishna asked him what was there under his arm. (Although He knew it very well). Sudama pretended that it was nothing and found himself pressing the bundle in an effort to hide it. The pressure made the old fragile cloth give way and the rice started pouring forth which Krishna collected in his hands. He put the rice in His mouth and granted Sudama Pataal Lok (Under ground World). He quickly caught another handful of rice and put it in His mouth and granted Sudama Thal Lok (Land World). He was about to reach for the rice a third time when His wife stopped him,” If you will give Sudama Par Lok (Upper World) also, what will become of Us?” There He stopped.

Note that Hinduism has Three Worlds as opposed to Islam’s Two.(Here and Hereafter)

If Ghalib were a Hindu he might have written, “teeno Jahan de ke……..”

Also note that it is possible for one to be given two worlds at a time.

So let us hope and do something for this. insha Allah.
