JIGAR MORAD ABADI AND GHALIB

FARQ SAAF ZAHIR HAI

You will discover the quality that is unique to Ghalib as compared to others. His ability to say a lot in few words and with magnificent simplicity, and piercing concepts.

1.

ﻧﮧ ﭘﻮﭼﮫ ﺩﮨﺮ ﻣﯿﮟ ﮐﺐ ﺳﮯ ﻣﯿﮟ ﺍﺱ ﻃﺮﺡ ﺧﺎﻧﮧ ﺧﺮﺍﺏ ﮨﻮﮞ
ﺟﻮ ﻧﮧ ﻣﭧ ﺳﮑﺎ ﻭﮦ ﻃﻠﺴﻢ ﮨﻮﮞ، ﺟﻮ ﻧﮧ ﺍُﭨﮫ ﺳﮑﺎ ﻭﮦ ﺣﺠﺎﺏ ﮨﻮﮞ

NA POOCH DAHR MEIN KAB SE MAIN IS TARAH KHANA KAHARAB HOON

JO NA MIT SAKA WO TALISM HOON, JO NA UTH SAKA WO HIJAAB HOON

[Don’t ask me since when I am being wasted in this world,

I represent the undying mystery, as well as a veil that continues to be on]

JIGAR MORADABADI

—————————————————————

کب سے ہوں کیا بتاؤں جہاں _ خراب میں

شب ہاۓ ہجر کو بھی رکھوں گر حساب میں

KAB SE HUN KYA BATAAUN JAHAAN E KHARAAB MEIN

SHAB HAYE HIJR KO BHI RAKHOON GAR HIASAAB MEIN

[What can I say since when I am in this wretched world,

If I count the (long) nights of loneliness also, that is.]

GHALIB

2.

ﺩﯾﮑﮭﺎ ﺗﮭﺎ ﮐﻞ ﺟﮕﺮ ﮐﻮ ﺳﺮِ ﺭﺍﮦِ ﻣﯿﮑﺪﮦ
ﺍﺱ ﺩﺭﺟﮧ ﭘﯽ ﮔﯿﺎ ﺗﮭﺎ ﮐﮧ ﻧﺸﮯ ﻣﯿﮟ ﭼُﻮﺭ ﺗﮭﺎ

DEKHA THA KAL JIGAR KO SAR E RAAH E MAIKADAH

IS DARJA PEE GAYA THA KE NASHE MEIN CHOOR THA.

[Jigar was seen yesterday near the pub,

he had drunk so much that he was thoroughly drunk.]

————————————————————————

کہاں میخانے کا دروازہ غالب اور کہاں واعظ

پر اتنا جانتے ہیں کل وہ جاتا تھا کہ ہم نکلے

KAHAN MAIKHANE KA DARWAZAH GHALIB AUR KAHAN WAAEZ

PAR ITNA JAANTE HAIN KAL WO JAATA THA KE HAM NIKLE.

[The door leading to the pub and the preacher

(who never fails to preach against drinking)  are incompatible

Yet strangely enough I met him yesterday, O Ghalib, at the door as he was coming out and I was about to enter]

3.

ﮐﯿﺎ ﺩﯾﮑﮭﯿﮟ ﮔﮯ ﮨﻢ ﺟﻠﻮﮦِ ﻣﺤﺒﻮﺏ ﮐﮧ ﮨﻢ ﺳﮯ

ﺩﯾﮑﮭﯽ ﻧﮧ ﮔﺌﯽ ﺩﯾﮑﮭﻨﮯ ﻭﺍﻟﮯ ﮐﯽ ﻧﻈﺮ ﺑﮭﯽ

KYA DEKHEN GE HAM JALWAH E MAHBOOB KE HAM SE

DEKHI NA GAYI DEKHNE WAALE KI NAZAR BHI

[How can one expect me to enjoy the lavish beauty of my beloved

as I am unable even to cast a glance at her gazing eyes]

 ——————————————————————————————-

کیوں جل گیا نہ تاب  _ رخ _ یار دیکھ کر

جلتا ہوں اپنی تا قت _ دیدار دیکھ کر

KYUN JAL GAYA NA TAAB E RUKH E YAAR DEKH KAR

JALTA HUN APNI TAAQAT E DEEDAAR DEKH KAR

[I wonder how come I (survived and) did not get burnt after having a good look at her glowing face. I am quite jealous of my own capacity to withstand such intense ‘beams’]

AHMAD FARAZ, SILSILE TOD GAYA

A very good ghazal from Faraz. Especially the rhymes are superb and the thoughts are usual: bewafayi of the beloved and the complaining about it.It also marvels in being very simple in composition but high in concepts.

SILSILE TOD GAYA WOH SABHI JAATE JAATE

WARNAH ITNE TO MARASIM THE KE AATE JAATE.

[He broke all the means of communication as he went away. Though I reckon our understanding was such that at least we could have continued visiting each others place.]

SHIKWAH E ZULMAT E SHAB SE TO KAHIN BEHTAR THA

APNE HISSE KI KOI SHAMMA JALAATE JAATE.

[It was better if one had lighted a mere candle oneself instead of complaining  about the darkness of the night]

KITNA AASAAN THA TERE HIJR MEIN MARNA JAANANA

PHIR BHI EK UMR LAGI JAAN SE JAATE JAATE.

[Although it was easy to die of the loneliness, O beloved, but still it took me a whole life dying slowly].

US KI WOH JANE USE PAAS E WAFA THA KE NAHIN

TUM FARAZ APNI TARAF SE TO NIBHAATE JAATE.

[Your beloved had any capacity to be faithful or not, I can’t say, but O Faraz, at least you could have played your part in keeping a semblance of relationship.]

Note: The second sher: instead of complaining about the darkness of the night….. is in my opinion very philosophical and the need of the hour. It is for all of us.
