Mirza Ghalib has produced a number of couplets in which he has managed to deal with the industry of life and of death in such a manner that one cannot but marvel. He makes the two events look like one in two or two in one

here are a few examples

Translation will be meaningless if done literally. One has to consider the traditions and the sensitivities of that era in order to comprehend the hidden, implied or wider meanings

-1

marte hain aarzoo mein marne ki

maut aati hai par nahin aati

[ I am dying to meet my death .The death obliges me, only to dodge me ]

-2

mohobbat mein nahin hai farq jeene aur marne ka

usi ko dekh kar jeete hain jis kaafir pe dam nikle

In love, there is no difference between life and death

my life revolves around the same person for whom I am prepared to die

:Note

Here, Ghalib uses the word ‘kafir’ (infidel) for his beloved which is a practice understood by all Urdu lovers but is hard to justify/ explain

-3

phir usi bewafa pe marte hain

phir wohi zindagi hamari hai

Again, it is going to be same life for me

(dying, again, for the same person (who never fails to be unfaithful

-4

we know that the morning dew disappears as soon as the sun comes up

I reckon I too will last only till my beloved casts a loving eye on me ,meaning

that I will evaporate under the intense gaze, like do the dew drops

-5

gham-e-hasti ka asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaj

shama har rang mein jalti hai sahar hone tak

what other cure for the ills of life is there ‘O’ Asad except death

the oil lamp emanates a series of scintillating colours during the night. meaning  the life suffers a long sequence of ups and downs till death brings an end to the misery
