Mahatma Gandhi with his girls

15 Dec

So you heard, didn’t you? About the great man sleeping naked with a girl on each side, also naked? (nothing happening, of course, but still….). If you haven’t, what world are you living in?. Read on now.

I am not even remotely qualified to make a comment on the life (style) of such an eminent and great soul. I can only wonder that his greatness seems to diminish by this unique “experiment” (the only in the entire world, through the entire history) but at the same time the same greatness is enhanced manifold by his frank and straight forward admission when the act was discovered and by his insistence upon continuing with it till end of his life. He called it atmashuddhi yagna (soul purification act) but forgot to think how it affected his partners of the experiments. I wonder how he would react if his wife, whom he left alone since he was 37, in the name of (his) celibacy , started sleeping naked with two naked men, for she never wanted celibacy apparently. If you strike a chord on a sitar, you hear music and you are amused. Do you ever think what pains the tightly stretched wire is itself experiencing? Similarly, did the Mahatma gave any thought to what psychological and physical effects would be on his partner girls?

Below I am reproducing the article about this “experiment” from India Today magazine.

    Amazing !
How can a man endure sleeping naked with his grandniece and even with his nephew’s wife???
    In the name of religion!!!
That was the man of a nation — or — a trampler of ethics!
But, that is the one side of this story — the other side is that how a grandniece can sleep naked with his grandfather and how a woman can sleep naked with his husband’s uncle?
Totally mind-blowing. I was not aware of this controversial story about the life of Gandhi before — but know it comes into my knowledge with this blog that it has a status of a known story in history.

In the beginning I used to think it couldn’t be true. Then it transpired that it was true and this article gives account of one of the the girls herself through her diary. very few people have any thing if any to say about this weird behaviour.

Because – we as muslims – can’t think about this act.
Ghoom phir kar baat mazhab par aati hay. un say is tarah ki kisi bhi act ki tawaqqu ki jasakti hay. kion-k akhlaaq k ma’yaar main bohot farq hay!

Dear Sir Rafiullah Mian Sahab, I beg to disagree here on the point of “kion-k akhlaaq k ma’yaar main bohot farq hay!” for the standard of morality of Hindus is as, if not more, comprehensive as that in Islam. I know this because I have lived a life among them. What the great man did was not as a Hindu, but as a philosopher making experiments with his own powers of resistance to temptations. We ordinary people find it hard to understand and that is why I find it hard to make a comment. Weird, strange, yes but immoral, perhaps no.
