Lunar and Solar years

It is generally believed that a Lunar year is smaller than a Solar year by about 10 days.

It is given in the Qoran that some people were in a cave then they went to sleep and Allah caused them to remain asleep for 300 years and for 9 more years. When they awoke they thought that they had been sleeping for only a day or so. See full surah 18 (Alkahaf)

ولبثو ا في كهفهم ثلثه ماأته سنين و از دادو تسعا

  18:25

Translation by Sahih International

And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.

 Translation in Urdu

اور اصحاب کہف اپنے غار میں نو اوپر تین سو سال رہے

Now my friend Prof. Muhammad Umar Chand told me that Allah gave these figures in both Solar and Lunar Calendars. He said that 300 years in Solar calendar are equal to 309 Lunar years. I have tried to confirm this observation below.

One lunar month = 29.531 days (taken from internet)

One lunar year = 29.531 x 12 = 354.372 days

one solar year = 365.25 days

300 solar years x 365.25 days = 109575 days

Now 109575 days / 354.372 = 309.2 lunar years!

Allah knows best why He said 300 years and 9 more years and NOT directly three hundred and nine years. But the above seems to be very credible reason.

Rafi Sahab, you are an adeeb and mathemtics and adab are mutually exclusive. I thought though that you would notice the exactness of the calculation (300 shamsi saal = 309 qamari saal) and that this forms a beautiful miracle (among many many others scattered all over the Holy Qoran).Because only Allah could have known it so precisely.

Oh, sure, I believe in numericals for some extent…I sometimes becomes captivated by the numericals … because Qura’an itself gives us some indications about … that’s why I love the thought of “Time Funda” … I call it “huge bubbles of time”… in a bubble time pasts by a minute and in another bubble time goes by a century … see in to the matter of Me’raaj… time was still in our world …. In the “Medaan-e-Hashr, there will be many bubbles of time… going side by side … Herat-angaiz …. Kaamyaab people will feel the time of hashr as long as the time of a Farz Namaaz… Naakaam people, alas, will feel as they running since many centuries….

You are right when you say Allah knows better but your explanation appears quite logical. Nice post.

I thought that now a days bears and some other animals can go in hibernation (sleep) for 6 months or more, some fish is burried in a dried pond mud, and comes alive when rain comes back, Allah SWT could have caused these men to sleep for so many years easily. It is not for us to think about logistics and believe in it compeletly. The figures though are interesting and invite curious prodding with the understanding that Only Allah knows truth. I thank you Slaim Bhai for your support.
