JAMEEL MAZHARI (MUSALLAS GHAZAL)

03 May

This ghazal is unique in that it has three misras in every sher. Amazing! This is the first time I have ever seen such a three pronged ghazal. May be it is unique but I do not know.

Below I will try to render the ghazal in Roman for the general reader.

(Thank you Liaqat Sahab)

JAMEEL MAZHARI (TRI-MISRA GHAZAL)

Husn jab arsh se utra to lab-e-baam aya

Manzil-e- noor ta zulf-e- siah faam aya

Hawas-e-said meiN phailaaye hue daam aya

Sar-e-shoridah na jab paye sanam tak pahoNcha

Barak Allah junooN baab-e-haram tak pahoNcha

Ghul hai kaabe meiN rah-e-kardah-e aasnaam aya

Wohi zehnoN meiN kaji garadn-o-dastaar bhi kaj

Kajravi hai teri taareekh ki raftaar bhi kaj

Tujh ko chalna na kabhi gardish-e-ayyaam aya

Dar hai aye aql ke thande na hoN bazaar tere

Tod deN teri taraazoo na khareedaar tere

Teri duniya meiN kidhar ishq ghalat gaam aya

YoorisheN mantaq-o-hikmat ki ayazan billah

Dil-e-arbab-e-mohobbat meiN mili tujh ko panah

Na to kaaba na sanam khana tere kaam aya

Jin ko pindaar-e-khirad tha who huye saudaayi

Shaanah faarigh hua aayeene ne fursat paayi

Ab to aye naaz-e-khud aara tujhe araam aaya?

Haq to yeh hai ke ibaadat bhi junooN thi lekin

Zuhad kya aql ki shiddat bhi junooN thi lekin

Bach gaye sab tere deewaanoN pe ilzaam aya

Ab to is booye pareshaaN ko qareeb apne bulaao

Ab to paidaa karo kuchh apni tabiyat meiN jhukaao

Ke phir is zulf-e-girahgeer ka paighaam aya

Us ke har naaz pe jhuk jhuk ke kahaaN tak hoN zaleel

Abhi seedha na hua tha kham-e-gardan ke JAMEEL

Ek naye bhes meiN phir fitna-e asnaam aya

Each sher seems to be at the height of excellence, both technically and more so substance wise. The first sher defines the nature of this world’s inherent character of a trap for sinfulness and the last one speaks of one’s helplessness in the world of temptations. A Great read.

Thanks Shakil Akhtar. I feel this ghazal is close to Allama Iqbl’a kalam structurally. Shaaer conveyed the message beautifully. I enjoyed the selection of decent words in every misrah. Your selection of ghazals is really unique. You deserve congratulations for researching such meaningful and fabulous shaaery from the ocean of urdu adab (Masha Allah).

please, please translate them for us too. i love urdu shayari but just like sanskrit i only love their sound because meaning is yet elusive to me.

      हुक्म की तामील हो गी,
      तथास्तु
It will be done insha Allah soon
there are many words in Bangla that come from Sanskrit. Translation kills the sprit but one can not help if one has no option
